Whether you are looking to treat yourself to a little relaxing time at the spa or you want a more radiant complexion, getting a facial is one of the most enjoyable experiences you can have at a spa or salon. Among the different types of facials, there is one that gets asked for a little more often than the rest: paraffin facial. Even if you are familiar with facials, the paraffin facial may be one that you don't know a lot about. Take a look at some of what you likely want to know about getting a paraffin facial.

What is paraffin wax anyway?

Paraffin wax is a soft, colorless solid material that is a derivative of petroleum or shale and commonly used in beauty treatments and products. Paraffin is almost like candle wax in consistency, so when it is heated, it becomes more malleable and can be spread over the creases and contours of the face in an even fashion. As the material cools, it hardens back to its original state and can be peeled off of the skin and discarded.

How is the paraffin facial beneficial to your skin?

Paraffin wax has been used to moisturize the skin in different beauty treatments for a lot of years. Additionally, the wax can pull away with it compounds and residues that are hanging out on the skin when it is peeled off. Therefore, it does a good job of removing impurities that could be dulling the radiance of your face. Not only is the paraffin wax good for your skin, but the process of getting a facial with the wax is also highly relaxing.

What does the process of getting a paraffin facial look like?

When you go to the spa or salon and request a paraffin wax facial, you will be seated in a comfortable chair with your head resting on a pillow or allowed to lie down on a massage table for the treatment. The technician will use a tool to spread the warmed paraffin wax on your face after it has been warmed to a medium temperature that makes the material malleable but not so hot that it would cause any irritation. You will wait for the paraffin to cool and harden, then it will be peeled away. Once gone, the professional will probably do a follow-up treatment with a gentle exfoliator scrub and pat your face dry.
